Paying Rent With Your Credit Card Can Make Sense
You use a credit card to pay for gas, groceries and even the clothes you're wearing, but does it really make financial sense to put your rent on your credit card? It might sound risky, but according to this article by USA Today, it can make a lot of sense if you're using the right credit card and have financial discipline.
So when does it make sense?
If you're using your credit card to quickly improve your credit score.
Paying your rent with a credit card can help you build or repair your credit score very quickly. Your payment history makes up 35% of your credit score and if you pay your rent off every month, you can quickly see the positive impact on your credit score.
If you're using a credit card that gives you cash back or other perks like airline points.
For example, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard has a 2.2% rewards rate on every purchase. Paying $1,000 a month in rent on your card would net you $22 a month in rewards.
If you have a new credit card with a good introductory sign-up bonus.
To redeem some of these sign-up bonuses, you are required to spend a certain amount of money in a short period of time.
For example, the Barclaycard is offering 40,000 bonus miles worth $400 for travel when you spend $3,000 or more on purchases within the first 90 days from account opening. If you normally wouldn't hit the $3,000 mark, it might make sense for you to pay rent on this card to get there as the rewards will more than offset any processing fees you'll pay.
If it’s the only way you can pay your rent on time.
It’s not uncommon to run in to situations where you don’t have the cash in your account to cover your upcoming rent. Maybe you don’t get paid until after your rent is due. Using a credit card to ensure your rent is paid on time almost always costs less than the late fee’s your landlord will charge you or a returned check fee.
Finally, it's important to pay off your rent every month.
Failing to pay off your credit card every month can leave you hanging with interest. If you leave a balance of $1,000 on your card at 12.99% APR, you'll end up paying $10.75 the first month in interest, which can offset the value of gaining cash back or airline miles.
A bit about fees

credit fee
No one wants to pay a fee but in order to give you the ability to pay your rent with a credit card, we must pay the interchange and processor fees which end up being a percentage of your rent payment. The fee will never increase and we're working hard with our partners to lower the fee even further.

local courts located in Los Angeles County, California and the federal courts located in the Central District of California for the resolution of all disputes, and agree that any and all disputes shall be resolved exclusively in those courts.
